On February 15 the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Division of Student Development hosted Loyola University Chicago’s Black History Month celebration. Featuring world-renowned poet, education, and activist, Nikki Giovanni and live entertainment from Loyola Alumna, Yanna Cello, students, faculty, and staff gathered at Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus to uplift Black excellence through music, diasporic food, and conversation.

A standout moment of the evening was being inspired by a true Black icon—Nikki Giovanni’s insightful remarks left a lasting impression, serving as a powerful reminder of the strength and creativity inherent within the Black community. Nikki read several poems, and encouraged attendees to be inspired by their own experiences. Our stories, no matter how common they may seem, possess the power to inspire extraordinary works of art.
